sir,
have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your Despatch No.138 of the 27th. May last on the subject
of the construction of Pedder Street Pier and other Government
Piers.
2. In reply to paragraph 2 of that despatch, I beg to inform you that the letter of the Director of Public Works of the 24th. November last was written before the Commit- tee appointed by Sir William Robinson to report on Government Piers had met and made their recommendations, and that the fi- gures given by Mr.Ormsby referred to the balance on the ori- ginal estimate for Government Piers.
The approved recommendations of this Committee involved a complete change in design and necessitate an ex- penditure largely in excess of the original estimate.
3. In addition to the Pedder Street Pier, it is
proposed to build a new Harbour Master's Pier which was pro- vided for in the original scheme and may be constructed of timber procured locally.
Enclosure No. 128.
4. You will observe from the enclosed copy of
the minutes of the meetings of the Committee already referred
to that recommendations in favour of erecting two more piers The Right Honourable
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN M.P.
